CMDB & Ownership

Cloudaware CMDB is the source of truth for which systems exist, what they run, and who owns them.

Use this guide to understand how Patch Management uses CMDB data to drive scope, ownership, and accountability.

CMDB Data for Scoping

You can define patch scope using:

  • Tags and labels (for example, app=payments, env=prod).
  • CMDB relationships such as “runs on”, “depends on”, and “owned by”.
  • Groupings like business unit, cost center, or project.

This allows you to target, for example, “all prod web servers in account X” without manually maintaining host lists.

Ownership and Routing

By linking hosts to applications and teams in CMDB you can:

  • Route notifications and approvals to the right owners.
  • Break down compliance and coverage reports by team.
  • Ensure that responsibility for patching is clear for every asset.

Keeping CMDB Healthy

Accurate patch scoping depends on accurate CMDB data. Make CMDB hygiene part of your onboarding and change processes so new systems and ownership changes are reflected quickly.
