Metrics

Metrics are numerical time series that describe the behavior and performance of your systems. Unified Monitoring collects metrics from cloud providers, Breeze Agent/Zabbix, and third‑party monitoring tools. Metrics are typically consumed in their source-native form and enriched with Cloudaware CMDB context for filtering, correlation, and operational analysis.

Metric Types

Common metric categories include:

  • Utilization metrics – CPU, memory, disk, network, and other resource usage.
  • Traffic metrics – request rate, throughput, connection counts.
  • Error metrics – error counts or rates, failed checks, timeouts.
  • Latency metrics – response times and queue lengths.
  • Capacity metrics – total capacity, free space, available connections.

The exact metrics available depend on the source system and the integrations enabled in your environment.

Metric Names and Dimensions

Metric names, units, and dimensions are generally preserved from the originating source. What to expect:

  • Clear, descriptive names (for example, CPU Utilization, Max, %, Network In/Out, MB/s, Zabbix: Incidents, 30-Day, etc.).
  • Units that are obvious from the name or available in metadata.
  • Consistent names or prefixes per domain or service (for example, New Relic Host: CPU Used, Zabbix: Is Monitored, Datadog: Status, etc).

Tags and Metrics

Attach tags that let you slice and aggregate data by:

  • Cloud scope – account/subscription, project, region, availability zone.
  • Business context – application, service, environment (dev/stage/prod), business unit.
  • Technical context – instance group, cluster, role, component.

Metrics and CMDB Context

Metrics are linked to CMDB CIs via identifiers such as resource IDs, hostnames, or tags. This enables:

  • Navigating from a CI (for example, an EC2 instance or database) directly to its metrics and alerts.
  • Building dashboards and coverage reports based on CMDB attributes.
  • Correlating metrics with configuration, change, and cost data in other modules.

Working with Heterogeneous Metrics

Since Unified Monitoring consumes metrics from multiple systems, similar signals may appear under different names or dimensions depending on the source. Use Cloudaware context to analyze metrics consistently across your estate.
