Metrics & KPIs
This guide summarizes common Cost Management metrics and KPIs and how to think about their calculation.
Exact field names and formulas will depend on your implementation and data model. Work with your Cloudaware representative to map these concepts to actual objects and fields.
Cost Metrics
-
Total Cost – Sum of all relevant cost components (usage, recurring, one‑time fees) for a given scope and period.
-
On‑Demand (Unblended) Cost – Cost at list/on‑demand rates for each usage line item, without averaging across accounts or commitments.
-
Blended Cost – Average cost rate across a consolidated billing group, reflecting blended pricing where applicable.
-
Effective Cost – Cost including amortized commitments and discounts, representing the true economic cost of usage.
Allocation Metrics
-
Allocated Cost – Portion of total cost attributed to specific owners (BUs, applications, teams, customers) according to allocation rules.
-
Unallocated Cost – Portion of cost that cannot be mapped to an owner (for example, missing tags or unmapped accounts).
-
Shared Cost – Cost explicitly treated as shared/platform and either kept in a central bucket or distributed via shared‑cost rules.
-
Allocation Coverage – Percentage of total cost that is allocated (allocated + shared) vs. unallocated.
Commitment Metrics
-
Commitment Coverage – Fraction of eligible usage (hours or spend) covered by RIs, Savings Plans, reservations, or CUDs.
-
Commitment Utilization – Fraction of purchased commitment that is actually used.
-
Commitment Savings – Difference between on‑demand cost and effective cost for usage covered by commitments.
Optimization and Waste Metrics
-
Waste Spend – Estimated monthly cost associated with idle or unused resources identified by policies (for example, unattached volumes, idle instances).
-
Rightsizing Potential – Estimated monthly savings if all rightsizing recommendations were applied.
-
Realized Savings – Savings actually achieved from implemented optimization actions over a defined lookback window.
-
Optimization Backlog – Potential savings identified but not yet implemented.
Unit‑Cost Metrics
Where business drivers are available:
- Cost per User/Customer/Tenant – Cost normalized by user, customer, or tenant count.
- Cost per Transaction/Request/API Call – Cost normalized by transaction, request, or API call volume.
- Cost per Workload Unit – Cost normalized by workload unit, such as environment, cluster, or feature.
Unit‑cost metrics depend on reliable driver data from product/usage systems and should be calculated in BI or reporting layers that can join cost and business data.
Governance and Performance Metrics
-
Budget Variance – Difference between actual or forecasted spend and budget, in absolute and percentage terms.
-
Anomaly Volume and Resolution Time – Number of cost anomalies detected in a period and how quickly they are investigated/resolved.
-
Tagging Compliance – Percentage of resources or spend with required tags; often broken down by BU or team.
Use these metrics to monitor the health of your FinOps practice and to inform continuous improvement efforts.
