Verify Backup Status

Use this workflow after enabling backup policies, changing tags, or investigating coverage gaps.

Check Protected Assets

Start from the backup coverage view in Cloudaware CMDB or CMDB queries and reports. Confirm that each in-scope asset has:

  • A backup policy.
  • A recent successful backup.
  • A valid retention policy.
  • A replication policy, if required.
  • An owner, application, and environment.

Review Job Results

For failed or delayed jobs, review the following details:

  • Job type, such as backup, replication, cleanup, or restore.
  • Source asset.
  • Account and region.
  • Error message or provider API error.
  • Last successful backup timestamp.

Common causes include missing permissions, invalid tags, provider rate limits, KMS access issues, or unavailable target buckets.

Close Coverage Gaps

For assets that should be protected but are not:

  • Confirm the asset is visible in CMDB.
  • Check whether required backup tags are missing or malformed.
  • Confirm the asset is in a supported class, region, and account.
  • Apply the correct policy tags.
  • Wait for the next job window or trigger the approved workflow for on-demand backup.

Verify Restore Readiness

For critical services, periodically confirm that:

  • Backup media can be located.
  • Required decryption keys are available.
  • Restore runbooks identify the source asset, target environment, validation steps, and rollback criteria.
  • Restore tests meet RPO/RTO targets.
